How to Pick the Right Email? I've Tried Them All
How to Pick the Right Email? I’ve Tried Them All
Picking an email service took me a while. Tried almost everything on the market. Now I stick with iCloud and QQ email. If I had to give general advice, for people in China, Outlook plus Foxmail is the golden combo.
Let’s start with Outlook. It’s an international email service, but you can log in directly in China without any hassle. That alone beats Gmail.
One good thing: you can find short, fancy usernames with just 5 digits or less on Taobao, and they’re not expensive. First thing after buying: change the password, bind your phone and a backup email, and enable two-factor authentication (2FA). Otherwise some dishonest sellers might take it back. Outlook lets you add ten aliases, which is plenty.
Warning: Outlook had a serious security flaw that could lead to account theft. Many cheap Minecraft accounts on Xianyu were registered with stolen Outlook accounts. If you’re buying a Minecraft account, don’t use a Microsoft account with an Outlook email. This vulnerability hasn’t been fully fixed yet — definitely enable two-factor authentication.
The downside is obvious: the spam filter is too aggressive. Even Microsoft official notifications got dumped in my spam folder before. Solution is simple: check the spam folder regularly, mark normal emails as “not spam,” and the system will learn.
Good usernames are mostly taken. Two options: either buy a short username as your main account and use aliases, or get creative — register an Outlook email from another country. Easy to do: change your Microsoft account’s country/region to whatever you want, like France, then add a new email address and you’ll see @outlook.fr as an option. I got one with .fr — looks like “friend,” which is neat. There are also Germany .de, Italy .it, Indonesia .id, and others.
Now let’s talk about Foxmail. Have to mention QQ email — many people look down on it, but it’s actually pretty capable. One QQ number can have three email addresses: the numeric @qq.com, an English @qq.com, and the key one — Foxmail. Apply for an @foxmail.com address in QQ email settings.
This domain is well-accepted internationally, and most importantly, emails sent from it almost always get through Outlook’s spam filter. That’s why I say Outlook plus Foxmail is the golden combo for sending and receiving emails in China.
Now about iCloud email. That’s my main one now. The receiving speed isn’t as slow as people say, the interface is clean, and it syncs seamlessly with Apple devices. The free version gives you 3 “hide my email” addresses to protect your real one.
But if you don’t have Apple devices, it’s a disaster — the web version is very limited. Basically it locks you into the Apple ecosystem. Also, the China version of iCloud+ is a stripped-down version; if you want full features like custom domains, you need an overseas Apple ID.
Gmail in China? Access is the problem — it’s unreliable. I use other clients to fetch it as a backup.
Old-school domestic email services — 163, 126, yeah, sina, sohu, plus Yahoo internationally — they work, but there’s no compelling reason to use them. They don’t tie to any major platform, so they’re fine as pure backup emails.
Finally, the niche choices. This time I looked into their custom domain email features and found some interesting options.
Yandex Mail, from Russia. The email service is usually accessible in China, but the cloud drive can’t be connected directly. VIP accounts can set up domain email, but it’s not that they sell you a domain — they just forward emails through their servers. Their servers are in Moscow, and email delivery to Eastern Europe is supposedly quite reliable. They use dynamic IP pools, which helps with marketing emails (EDM). Free version has a daily limit of about 200 emails, and no Chinese interface. The built-in email translation is a nice feature, but support for Chinese is far behind Google and QQ.
Zoho Mail — their main business is corporate email, but the personal free version is pretty solid. Short @zoho.com domains used to be hard to register, now the common one is @zohomail.com.
The coolest part: the free version lets you bind your own domain, making it a real you@yourcompany.com. Free plan supports up to 5 accounts and 5GB storage. For small teams or personal brands, it’s a zero-cost way to build a professional image — it’s that good.
Backend features are rich: end-to-end encryption, distributed storage for fast overseas access, but setting up MX records and SPF/DKIM has a learning curve for beginners. Another big advantage: seamless integration with Zoho’s own CRM and project management tools. For example, you can turn a customer email directly into a CRM lead or a project task, with high automation. The paid Advanced plan has better security and collaboration features.
以前短 @zoho.com 难注册,现在常见 @zohomail.com。
